About

Alfreton is a market town in the Amber Valley district of Derbyshire, in the East Midlands. The town grew from an agricultural settlement—its name comes from Old English Ælfred’s farm—and expanded during the 18th and 19th centuries with coal mining and ironworking. The town centre is focused on a traditional Market Place and a small public park, Alfreton Park, whose grounds include an ornamental lake and paths used by residents for walks and events. Local services and shops cluster along the main streets and the A61 runs close by, providing road links to neighbouring towns.

Transport hubs and community facilities sit within the town rather than outlying villages. Alfreton railway station offers regular regional services and the town hosts Alfreton Town Football Club at North Street. Heritage from the industrial period remains visible in former pits, terraces and civic buildings, while new housing sits alongside older rows. Municipal and voluntary groups use the market place and park for fairs and remembrance events, keeping civic life centred on the town itself.
