Amersham-on-the-Hill & Chesham Bois

Amersham-on-the-Hill occupies the ridge above Old Amersham and grew around the arrival of the Metropolitan Railway in the late 19th century. The station at Amersham is the terminus of the Metropolitan line and remains the main transport link for the town, giving the hill its pattern of streets that lead up from the older, lower high street. Local services, independent shops and a mix of housing sit close to pockets of green space and lanes that step down toward the medieval core of Old Amersham, where the parish church and older street plan mark the town’s earlier development.

Chesham Bois lies close to Amersham-on-the-Hill and retains a semi-rural feel through its commons and small blocks of ancient woodland. The village name derives from the de Bois family who once held the manor, a history visible in some field and property boundaries. Community facilities include a village hall and recreational grounds, and lanes from the Bois link into the broader network of footpaths and bridleways that thread between the two settlements.
