About
Antrim and Newtownabbey district occupies a swath of County Antrim north of Belfast Lough and reaching the northern shore of Lough Neagh. It was created in 2015 by merging the boroughs of Antrim and Newtownabbey and includes towns such as Antrim, Newtownabbey, Ballyclare, Randalstown, Crumlin and villages like Glengormley. Belfast International Airport at Aldergrove lies in the west of the district, and the M2 and M22 provide road links to Belfast and the northwest.
The district combines lowland farmland, river valleys and urban suburbs. The Six Mile Water runs through Antrim town toward Lough Neagh, and Antrim Castle Gardens mark the town centre with a walled park and gatehouse. Near Randalstown, Shane's Castle sits beside the Lough Neagh shoreline. There are industrial estates and commuter housing serving the Belfast region, local assembly plants, and a pattern of parishes and townlands that reflect historic settlement. Council services cover planning, leisure and local roads across this mix of coastal margin and inland plain.
