Ashburton & Buckfastleigh

The Ashburton & Buckfastleigh ward encompasses the historic stannary town of Ashburton and the riverside settlement of Buckfastleigh, situated within the eastern edge of Dartmoor National Park. The landscape is defined by the steep, wooded valley of the River Dart, which flows between the two communities. Ashburton, once a centre for tin mining and wool, retains a linear layout along its main street. Buckfastleigh is closely associated with the working Benedictine Buckfast Abbey, a major landmark whose grounds produce tonic wine.

Local economy has traditionally been connected to agriculture and tourism, with the South Devon Railway steam line operating heritage services along the river valley. The area's geology is notable, with the Buckfastleigh Caves forming a significant underground system. Moorland tracks from the towns provide direct access to Dartmoor's open terrain. The ward includes several surrounding villages and hamlets, creating a mix of residential and rural character within the Dartmoor fringe.
