Interactive map displaying Aykley Heads, Neville's Cross & Langley Moor

About

Aykley Heads sits on the northern edge of Durham and was long the site of Durham County Council’s County Hall. The council buildings and adjoining car parks occupy a plateau of open ground with lanes, footpaths and small copses used by walkers. Local bus routes connect the area with the city centre, and office blocks and meeting spaces concentrate public services that once served the whole county. The layout reflects decades of civic use rather than a single residential plan.

Neville’s Cross and Langley Moor lie close by to the west and southwest of that plateau. Neville’s Cross takes its name from the medieval stone cross that marks ground associated with the 1346 battle, and the neighbourhood includes a cluster of shops, a parish church and rows of houses. Langley Moor began as housing for colliery workers in the 19th century; terraces, community halls and allotments remain alongside pockets of former industrial land now returned to grass and scrub.
