About

The North East of England covers Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, County Durham and the Teesside area. Its shoreline runs along the North Sea from the Scottish border to where the River Tees meets the sea near Redcar. Major urban centres include Newcastle upon Tyne, Sunderland, Durham and Middlesbrough; the River Tyne and River Wear thread through former shipbuilding and coal districts. Gateshead sits beside Newcastle on the south bank of the Tyne, where the Angel of the North overlooks the motorway network.
Rural terrain ranges from coastal sands and the Farne Islands to upland moor and the Northumberland National Park. Hadrian’s Wall crosses Northumberland with Roman forts at Housesteads and Chesters. Durham’s cathedral and castle stand on a loop of the River Wear and are part of a World Heritage Site. Industry, agriculture and conservation coexist across the region, with reservoirs such as Kielder Water feeding river systems and providing recreation.
