About

Stockton-on-Tees lies on both banks of the River Tees in North East England and covers town and suburban areas including Billingham, Thornaby, Yarm and Ingleby Barwick. The borough grew around the port and industries on the Tees; the town of Stockton was the terminus of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, which carried the first steam-hauled passenger service into the town in 1825. The river remains central to the area: the Tees Barrage controls tidal flow and supports rowing and white-water activity, while riverside paths link parks, civic buildings and the High Street market that still operates in the town centre.

Local culture and services are centred on a mix of older streets and recent redevelopment along the riverfront. There are community arts spaces and civic venues, family housing estates and industrial zones that reflect different phases of growth. Transport links follow the Tees corridor and connect neighbourhoods to regional rail and road routes. The borough’s layout — settlements clustered along and around the river with working quays and suburban expansions — defines much of its character and everyday life.
