Backwell & Flax Bourton

Backwell and Flax Bourton sit close together in North Somerset, linked by lanes, footpaths and a stretch of railway. Backwell village has a compact centre with shops, a primary school and Backwell School nearby; the local station provides rail access on the main line. A notable local feature is Backwell Lake, a flooded former clay pit now used for angling and visited by waterfowl. Playing fields, allotments and a small network of streams shape daily life, and a sequence of public footpaths runs through the fields between the villages.

Flax Bourton occupies a quieter, more dispersed footprint with a parish church and a handful of farmsteads clustered around the lane network. The former Flax Bourton station survives only in memory and in a few buildings alongside the track, while hedgerows and field patterns record long farming use. Residents and visitors make regular use of the footpaths that link both settlements, crossing streams and low-lying meadows, and community facilities are centred on the village halls and school sites.
