About

Bellaghy ward encompasses a rural landscape of small settlements and farmland in the northwestern part of Mid Ulster. The area is centred on the village of Bellaghy itself, which acts as a local hub. The surrounding townlands are characterised by a patchwork of fields and low-lying terrain, with the Moyola River flowing through the southern section of the ward. This is a primarily agricultural part of County Londonderry.

The ward holds significant literary and historical resonance. It is the birthplace and childhood home of the Nobel laureate poet Seamus Heaney, and the local Seamus Heaney HomePlace centre is a major cultural attraction. The well-preserved 17th-century Bellaghy Bawn, a fortified house and bawn, now serves as a museum detailing the area's history and plantation-era past.
