About

Mid Ulster district occupies parts of counties Tyrone, Londonderry and a small area of County Armagh in Northern Ireland. It covers a mix of towns and rural land; principal towns include Dungannon, Cookstown, Magherafelt, Coalisland and Bellaghy. The district was created in 2015 by combining the former Cookstown, Dungannon and Magherafelt councils. Agriculture, light manufacturing and peatland management shape the local economy. The River Bann runs through Bellaghy and feeds wetlands around Lough Beg, providing habitat and a river corridor that links lowland areas to upland fringe country.

The district includes the western foothills of the Sperrin Mountains, areas of commercial forest and a number of lakes and bogs. West of Cookstown lie the Beaghmore stone circles and cairns, set within working farmland. Cookstown’s unusually broad main street reflects its planned 17th-century layout. Small villages, farms and town centres are connected by regional roads and rail links, and local cultural sites such as the Seamus Heaney HomePlace in Bellaghy draw visitors interested in literature and local history.
