Belmont & Carrville

The Belmont & Carrville area sits on the western edge of Durham city, characterised by residential streets and local amenities. The area is primarily residential, with a mix of housing estates and some local shopping parades serving the community. It is bordered by the A690, which provides a main transport route, and includes the large University Hospital of North Durham. Open spaces like Belmont Park offer recreational areas within the urban setting.

A notable local landmark is the former Belmont Viaduct, a substantial brick railway structure that arches over the valley. The area has a practical, suburban feel, with schools and community facilities centred around the old village core. The landscape slopes towards the River Wear, with some views across to the more wooded banks on the opposite side, contrasting with the built-up neighbourhoods.
