Berinsfield & Wittenham

Berinsfield sits in South Oxfordshire on the Thames floodplain south of Oxford. The village was planned and built in the mid‑20th century on former farmland; archaeological work before development exposed Romano‑British settlement evidence. Housing and community facilities grew around a main street with a primary school, shops, a village hall and light industrial units. Local footpaths and bus links connect to neighbouring villages and to riverside meadows. Seasonal floodplain management and grazing shape the landscape around the settlement and create areas used for walking and informal sport.

The neighbouring Wittenham area centres on Little Wittenham and the pair of rounded hills known as the Wittenham Clumps. The twin hills are topped by beech trees and visible earthworks that record long human use; surrounding pasture, woodlands and wetlands are managed by the Earth Trust. Public paths climb the Clumps and run out along the Thames floodplain, where willow and alder carrs, oxbow pools and meadows support waterfowl, insects and wildflowers during the year.
