Berkhamsted is a market town situated in the valley of the River Bulbourne, within the Chiltern Hills. The Grand Union Canal runs through its centre, with historic narrowboats often moored along the towpath. The town's linear High Street follows the route of the old Roman road, Akeman Street.

The ruins of Berkhamsted Castle, a Norman motte-and-bailey fortress, stand at the edge of the town centre. Local commerce is focused along the High Street, with independent shops and traditional inns. The surrounding landscape includes the Ashridge Estate, with its area of ancient woodland and commons.
