About

Berwick-upon-Tweed sits in Northumberland at the mouth of the River Tweed and is the northernmost English town. The town grew as a border port and garrison; its pattern of streets and the surviving Elizabethan ramparts reflect that past. The ramparts form a continuous circuit with rounded bastions and a parade ground where 18th-century Berwick Barracks stands. The River Tweed and its tidal flats meet the town at low tide, and rail tracks cross the river on Robert Stephenson’s arched bridge, which carries the East Coast Main Line above the water.

The town centre runs between the walls and the river, with a market place, long rows of stone-built shops and houses, and narrow lanes that step down to quays and slipways. Public buildings such as the town hall and the old gates are set into the wall line, and the rampart walk provides direct views of the bridge and the estuary. A local museum in the barracks covers the military and maritime history that shaped the streets and docks of Berwick.
