The landscape is characterised by rolling farmland, deep wooded valleys, and scattered hamlets. Chulmleigh is a small market town with a historic church and buildings of local cob and stone.

The area is crossed by the Tarka Trail, following the course of a disused railway line through the countryside. The annual Chulmleigh Old Fair, established by charter in 1253, continues to be held in the town's square.
