About

Boston sits on the River Witham at the eastern edge of the Fens in Lincolnshire, with the channel known as The Haven running through the town toward The Wash. The surrounding low-lying landscape is crossed by drainage channels and the Maud Foster Drain, part of engineering works from the 17th century that reshaped local farmland. The borough contains a mix of small urban streets, market quays and agricultural land that reaches to reclaimed fenland to the west and north.

The town centre is organised around the Market Place and the medieval parish church of St Botolph, whose tower, known locally as the Stump, stands about 272 feet high and is visible for miles across the flats. Historic buildings such as the Guildhall and the old Customs House sit close to riverfront wharves where cargo boats still load and unload. Agricultural trade, food processing and port services are important to the local economy, and weekly markets continue a trading pattern that stretches back several centuries.
