About

Box Hill sits on the North Downs chalk escarpment in Mole Valley, Surrey. Managed in part by the National Trust, its slopes hold rare stands of box (Buxus sempervirens) amid chalk grassland and scrub. Trails climb the famous Zig Zag path to a summit viewpoint that looks across the Weald; the climb is a regular route for walkers and cyclists and featured in the 2012 Olympic road race. Chalk outcrops, footpaths and the patchwork of ancient land use give the hill a long-established pattern of access and habitats.
Brockham is a village on the River Mole with a village green, parish church and a cluster of homes and farms. At the village edge a small onshore oil well has been established within the local oilfield and remains an unmistakable element of the landscape. Public footpaths, lanes and orchards connect fields around Brockham, and local community events use the green and village hall as focal points. The mix of managed countryside and village settlement reflects the rural character of this part of Mole Valley.
