Brancaster, Burnham Market & Docking

Brancaster sits on the northern edge of the Wash, where a tidal quay at Brancaster Staithe gives access to creeks, mudflats and salt marsh. Local boats lie aground at low water and tracks run out onto the beach toward the National Trust shoreline and the sandbanks off the coast. The Royal West Norfolk Golf Club runs along the marsh edge and the estuary channels are used by birdwatchers and anglers; curlew and oystercatcher are regular sights on the flats. Boats and footpaths link the staithe with the wider coastal landscape and conservation areas offshore.

Burnham Market and Docking lie a few miles inland, linked by narrow lanes and public footpaths. Burnham Market is centred on a square of former coaching inns, independent shops and a village green, while the Burnhams include Burnham Thorpe, where Admiral Horatio Nelson was born. Docking retains a compact village core with a market history and lanes opening to arable fields. The area is worked farmland, saltmarsh and small village centres, with local services, seasonal markets and a network of country walks connecting settlements.
