About

Brandon sits in West Suffolk on the edge of the Brecks, an expanse of sandy soil, gorse and pine. The town grew around a long-standing pattern of extractive industry and agriculture; sand and gravel pits are part of the local landscape and led to the lakes that define parts of the immediate area today. Brandon railway station is on the Breckland Line, linking the town to regional rail services. The parish church of St Peter stands near the centre and the town retains a mix of small shops, community facilities and weekday markets that serve surrounding villages.

The most visible local change is the conversion of former extraction sites into recreational water and woodland, notably the lakes at Brandon Country Park, which were dug for sand and gravel and now form walking routes and fishing spots. Paths follow old pit edges and meet strips of heath and plantation that reflect the Brecks’ soil. A short network of local footpaths connects housing areas to green spaces, and the town functions as a service point for people living in the surrounding rural landscape.
