About

Burnham-on-Sea sits on the eastern shore of the Bridgwater Bay estuary. The town is defined by its expansive tidal mudflats and a long, low-lying beach. Its most recognisable feature is the red-and-white striped lighthouse, which stands on wooden legs directly on the sand.

The area is part of a large coastal plain, with the River Brue and River Parrett meeting nearby. The low lighthouse, one of the shortest in the UK, is a navigation aid built due to the area's shifting sands and shallow waters. Much of the immediate hinterland consists of agricultural fields and drained marshland.
