Burwell sits on the edge of the Cambridgeshire Fens, an area characterised by wide, flat agricultural landscapes and extensive drainage systems. The village itself is one of the largest in the region, with a linear layout following the main street. Its economy has long been connected to the surrounding farmland, though it also functions as a residential settlement for those commuting to Cambridge and other nearby towns.

A notable historical feature is the large medieval turf maze, the Shepherd's Ring, cut into the ground near the church. The village is also known for the former Burwell Chemical Works, a site of a significant historical explosion in the 19th century. To the north, the land opens out into the true fen, with the man-made Reach Lode waterway providing a link to the River Cam system.
