Burwell

Burwell ward covers the large village of Burwell and its surrounding rural land in East Cambridgeshire. The settlement is situated near the edge of the Fenland basin, with the area's history tied to medieval peat digging and subsequent flooding. This created the distinctive shallow lakes known locally as the Burwell Lodes, which are part of the wider drainage system. The ward contains a mix of residential streets, agricultural fields, and areas of ecological interest on the fen edges.

The village centre is focused along High Street and North Street, with local shops and services. St. Mary's Church, with its landmark spire, stands near the site of a former castle. A notable feature is the presence of two historic windmills, a rare surviving post mill and a larger tower mill, reflecting the area's agricultural past. The ward includes the museum housed in the former steam pumping station, which highlights the critical importance of land drainage to the development of the local landscape and communities.
