About

Castle Vale sits to the northeast of Birmingham city centre and was laid out in the post-war period as a council overspill estate. The neighbourhood occupies the site of the former Castle Bromwich aerodrome and aircraft factory where many Spitfires were produced during the Second World War. Housing originally included a mix of tower blocks, maisonettes and terraces; by the late 20th century parts of the estate had fallen into poor condition and services were stretched. Local amenities have included small shopping parades, schools and community-run projects serving residents on the estate itself.

From 1993 to 2005 the Castle Vale Housing Action Trust carried out a long-term regeneration programme that changed much of the built environment and community provision. The work replaced many high-rise blocks with new housing, upgraded roads and utilities, and supported new community facilities and business space. Today the area is known for ongoing local community organisations, a retail park on the estate edge, and pockets of green space and play areas used by families and groups within Castle Vale.
