About

Castle ward is located on the north bank of the River Wear in Sunderland's city centre. The area is historically the core of the original settlement, centred around the former site of the Bishop of Durham's castle. It is a mixed-use district containing civic buildings, retail centres, and residential streets. The ward's topography slopes noticeably from its higher western sections down to the riverside.

A key landmark is the Victorian-era Sunderland Minster, which stands on the site of a much older church. The ward contains the modern Echo 24 building and the Bridges shopping centre. St. Mary's Way is a major thoroughfare running through the area. The ward's boundaries include the Wearmouth Bridge, connecting it to the south side of the river.
