About

Castlefield sits at the western edge of Manchester city centre where canals, brick viaducts and railway lines meet. The area contains visible remains of the Roman fort Mamucium and the earthworks and stone foundations are set beside the canal basin. The basin links the Bridgewater Canal into the city’s canal network and is ringed by former warehouses and engine houses now used for bars, offices and the Museum of Science and Industry. Liverpool Road Station, opened in 1830 as the first purpose-built passenger railway terminus, sits within this mix of waterways and rail infrastructure and anchors several walking routes through Castlefield.

Deansgate runs north from Castlefield into the central shopping and business district and carries both road and rail connections, including Deansgate railway station and the Metrolink at Deansgate-Castlefield. The street passes the John Rylands Library and the Beetham Tower and is lined with shops, cafes and office buildings. Routes from Deansgate provide direct access to the canal basin and the exposed Roman fort remains, making a short walk from mainline transport into the area’s industrial and Roman layers.
