Central Coventry

Central Coventry sits inside the A4053 ring road, with Broadgate and surrounding streets forming the commercial core. Pedestrianised routes link shops, cafes and municipal buildings, while short blocks and public squares make the area walkable. The Broadgate plaza fronts the Belgrade Theatre and leads toward the cathedral precinct, and several bus routes terminate close to the main shopping streets, keeping the centre connected to the rest of the city.

The cathedral complex occupies a central place in the layout: the ruined 14th‑century tower and nave stand beside the 1962 cathedral, where a large Graham Sutherland tapestry hangs behind the high altar. Nearby the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum and the Coventry Transport Museum sit within easy walking distance, the latter holding an extensive collection of British cars and motorcycles. A row of timber-framed buildings on Spon Street, reconstructed after wartime destruction, offers a direct link to the city’s medieval street pattern. Parts of the River Sherbourne run in culvert beneath the centre, a reminder of earlier routes now hidden from view.
