About

Chalford and Bussage sit in the Golden Valley of the River Frome, the settlements following the line of the stream where waterpower once drove cloth mills. Chalford occupies the valley floor and lower slopes, with rows of former weavers' cottages and mill buildings close to the channels that fed the mill races. Many millworks have been converted to homes and workshops, and narrow lanes climb from the river into terraces of stone houses. Footpaths run along old packhorse routes and beside short stretches of industrial earthworks that mark the 18th- and 19th-century woollen trade.

Bussage stands on higher ground above the valley and has a village hall, school and recreation ground that serve local residents. The two places are connected by minor roads and public paths used by walkers and cyclists; regular bus services link them to Stroud. Local life pivots on community facilities, parish events and outdoor access rather than large commercial centres. Where the valley tightens, you can still see groups of cottages clustered around former yard spaces where looms were set up, a reminder of the area’s working past.
