About

Cheddar sits at the southern edge of the Mendip Hills, where a limestone gorge cuts a deep cleft through the rock. Cliffs rise to about 450 feet and a spring-fed stream, the Cheddar Yeo, runs along the base of the village. Below ground, Gough's Cave and Cox's Cave form a network of passages and stalactite formations; human remains known as Cheddar Man were recovered from Gough's Cave in 1903. The name Cheddar is linked to the cheese that developed here and was traditionally matured in the cool cave spaces.

Axbridge lies a short distance east of the gorge on the River Axe and retains a compact market square and a medieval street pattern. The parish church of St Mary and several narrow lanes reflect the town’s long-established role as a local trading point. Both settlements provide direct access to Mendip limestone features and cave systems, and local businesses and farms still reference the area’s geological setting in food production and land use.
