About

Chertsey sits on the right bank of the River Thames in the borough of Runnymede, with Chertsey Bridge and Chertsey Lock providing river crossings and navigation. A narrow channel known as the Abbey River splits from the Thames and runs through the town; it dates to medieval mill works and still defines parts of the town centre. Flood meadows called Chertsey Meads lie along the river, offering paths and open grassland that flood in winter. Remains of Chertsey Abbey, founded in 666, are set close to the High Street and give the town a clear link to its early medieval origins.

The High Street has local shops, cafés and historic buildings clustered near the abbey site and the parish church of St Peter. Light commercial areas and residential streets fan out from the centre, with playing fields and school sites within walking distance. Regular bus services and a nearby railway station connect Chertsey to surrounding towns; roads link to the M25 and other major roads for longer journeys. Community events and markets take place on the meads and in town, reflecting the riverside setting and long civic history.
