About

Cheshire East is a unitary authority in the county of Cheshire in North West England. It covers Crewe, Macclesfield, Congleton, Sandbach, Wilmslow, Knutsford and surrounding villages, and was created in 2009. The area mixes towns with agricultural land on the Cheshire Plain and includes parts of the eastern Pennines foothills. Crewe is best known for its railway works and station; Macclesfield retains links to its silk-manufacturing past and hosts the Silk Museum. Jodrell Bank Observatory sits near Goostrey, its Lovell Telescope a landmark and part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The district contains woodlands, reservoirs and sandstone escarpments. Macclesfield Forest and Tegg's Nose Country Park offer ridgelines and trails; The Cloud rises above the surrounding plain near Bosley. Rivers such as the Dane and Bollin cross the district, feeding lowland farmland and village mills. Country houses and parks appear alongside newer housing and industrial areas, with markets and small manufacturing in market towns. Transport links include the West Coast Main Line at Crewe and motorway links that connect the district to Manchester and Stoke-on-Trent.
