About

Colney Hatch sits in the London Borough of Barnet. It grew up around the mid-19th century Colney Hatch Lunatic Asylum, later Friern Hospital, which opened in 1851 and closed in 1993. Much of the hospital complex was retained and converted into Princess Park Manor, where the asylum's central clock tower and chapel remain part of the built fabric. The manor and surrounding grounds form a visible local landmark and are linked to a mix of new housing and restored Victorian buildings.

The area is mainly residential with pockets of shops, community facilities and small public open spaces. Local streets show a range of housing types from Victorian terraces to 20th-century estates. Day-to-day life centres on the former hospital precinct and nearby retail strips, with bus services connecting to wider Barnet and north London. Community groups use repurposed hospital buildings for meetings and events, keeping the site in active use while the area continues to change.
