About

Consett sits on high ground in County Durham and grew around the 19th- and 20th-century iron and steel works that dominated the town until the plant closed in 1980. The town centre has a mix of shops and a regular market, community facilities and a non-league football club that draws local support. The old industrial footprint is still visible: large mounds and reclaimed ground mark where furnaces and workshops once stood, and those features shape sightlines across the town.

Outside the centre, towpaths and former railway lines have been repurposed for walking and cycling, including the linear greenway that follows the Derwent valley route into the surrounding countryside. Moorland and open space rise quickly from the town edge, offering access to upland routes without leaving the Consett area. Recent years have seen housing and light industry replace parts of the former works, and community groups run projects that use former industrial sites for allotments, wildlife plots and local events.
