About

Crewkerne is a market town in South Somerset close to the Dorset border, set in the valley of the River Axe. The town has a station on the West of England Main Line, linking it by rail toward Exeter and London. The main streets rise gently from the river and meet at a market area framed by shops and civic buildings. A parish church dedicated to St Bartholomew stands near the centre, and several terraces and civic houses date from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Industry shaped the town’s layout: medieval cloth production was followed by glove-making and later seed packing, and traces of those trades remain in the footprint of former workshops and warehouses by the river. Narrow lanes lead to converted mill buildings and small squares used for weekly markets and events. Local services include community halls, schools and a public library that serve a wide rural area around Crewkerne.
