Donaghcloney ward is situated in the northwestern section of the Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon district. It is a primarily rural area defined by the River Lagan, which flows through its centre, and the flat, fertile land of the Lagan Valley. The settlement pattern consists of the village of Donaghcloney itself, along with several smaller hamlets and dispersed farms, all connected by a network of narrow country roads.
The local economy has historical ties to the linen industry, with the remains of a large mill complex still visible near the river. The area is characterised by mixed agriculture and quiet residential living. A notable local landmark is the elegant, nine-arch railway viaduct that spans the valley, a remnant of the former Great Northern Railway line that once served the community.
