Dursley

Dursley sits in the Stroud district of Gloucestershire at the foot of the Cotswold escarpment. The River Cam flows through the town, cutting a narrow valley and shaping the layout of streets and small greens. The centre is built around a market street with shops, civic buildings and St James' parish church, which occupies a rise above the valley. Housing ranges from terraced streets near the river to later suburban developments on higher ground. Local services include primary and secondary schools, community facilities and a small local museum that records the town’s past.

Manufacturing and engineering have been important to Dursley’s economy; light industry and workshops sit alongside retail and service businesses. The imprint of the old Dursley and Midland Junction Railway can still be seen in a linear belt of trees and a few railway cuttings that cross the town, reminders of a branch line that once linked Dursley to the wider network. Recreational space follows the river, with footpaths along the valley edge and playing fields used by local clubs and schools.
