About

East Downs ward occupies the easternmost section of the Isle of Sheppey, bordered by the North Sea. The landscape is predominantly flat, open farmland and marshland, with scattered residential settlements. The area includes the villages of Eastchurch and Leysdown-on-Sea, which serve as local population centres. Leysdown features a long shingle beach looking out towards the Thames Estuary.

The ward contains the Elmley National Nature Reserve, a significant expanse of coastal wetland managed for wildlife. This reserve is one of the few in England where you can drive through the working farmland to reach the visitor centre. Agricultural use and environmental conservation define much of the land use here, with a network of quiet rural lanes connecting the communities.
