About

Fareham district sits on the north shore of the Solent in Hampshire, between Southampton and Portsmouth. The borough includes the market town of Fareham and settlements such as Portchester, Titchfield, Stubbington and Hill Head, and is crossed by the M27 and A27 with rail links at Fareham station to Portsmouth and Southampton. The district reaches down to the head of Portsmouth Harbour and contains Fareham Creek and other tidal inlets. History is visible in the built environment: Portchester Castle occupies and reuses the stonework and layout of a Roman shore fort, while Titchfield has the remains of a medieval abbey and a historic village street pattern.

The coastline and low-lying river mouths shape local habitats and leisure uses. Titchfield Haven National Nature Reserve at the mouth of the River Meon is managed for wetland birds and saltmarsh, and the Solent shore at Hill Head and Stubbington provides sailing and shoreline access. Land use ranges from town centres and light industry to agricultural fields and fragments of chalk downland inland, with many residents commuting to neighbouring urban centres across the Solent and along the M27 corridor.
