About

Glossop is a market town in the High Peak borough of Derbyshire, on the western edge of the Peak District. The town sits where the moorland drains into a narrow valley, with Glossop Brook running through the centre and the River Etherow nearby. 19th-century mills line parts of the town centre; Howard Town Mills is a mill complex converted to shops and offices. Norfolk Square remains the focal point for the market and civic buildings, and Old Glossop preserves a grid of older streets and stone houses.

Rail links connect Glossop to Manchester via the branch that crosses Dinting Viaduct, and the line terminates at Glossop station close to the town centre. From the high streets it's a short climb onto the surrounding moorland, making the town a base for walks onto Kinder Scout and the gritstone edges above. Local footpaths run along valley sides, following old packhorse routes and disused railway cuttings, giving direct access to reservoirs and gritstone outcrops used by walkers and climbers.
