Great Lumley & Bournmoor

Great Lumley and Bournmoor are neighbouring settlements in the eastern part of County Durham, positioned between Chester-le-Street and Houghton-le-Spring. The area is characterised by residential housing, local amenities, and surrounding farmland, with the A182 road providing a central route. Historically, Great Lumley developed around Lumley Castle, a 14th-century fortified mansion that remains a prominent local landmark on the southern edge of the village.

The landscape is largely shaped by its past in coal mining, with former colliery sites now reclaimed as green spaces. Bournmoor is bordered by the wooded banks of the River Wear to the north. A specific local feature is the Lumley Millennium Green, a community-managed nature area created on old railway sidings, offering walking paths and wildlife habitats amidst the more urban surroundings.
