Greenwich Town & Park

Greenwich town sits beside the River Thames and centers on a cluster of maritime sites. The Cutty Sark, a 19th-century tea clipper, is preserved in a dry dock near Greenwich Market, which runs stalls selling antiques, crafts and street food. The Old Royal Naval College faces the river; its Painted Hall and the Queen's House form a sequence of buildings that house museum galleries, including the National Maritime Museum. The Greenwich Foot Tunnel begins close to the town and passes beneath the river, providing a pedestrian link to the north bank.

Greenwich Park rises behind the town and contains the Royal Observatory, where the Prime Meridian is marked across the ground and visitors can stand with one foot in each hemisphere. The park's observatory terrace gives clear views over the river from the historic lawn, and paths lead through formal avenues, open grass and small wooded plots. A bandstand and a flower garden sit near the park core, and sports pitches and playgrounds occupy lower slopes. The park and town combine public green space with maritime and royal buildings, and the area is used by walkers, school groups and researchers.
