Guildhall

Guildhall ward encompasses the historic core of York, directly surrounding the River Ouse. The area is defined by the city's medieval street pattern, including the Shambles and Stonegate. It contains the Guildhall itself, a historic meeting place, and the Mansion House. The ward functions as the civic and commercial heart, with a concentration of shops, markets, and government buildings alongside historic sites.

The River Ouse forms a key boundary, with Kings Staith landing stage on its banks. A notable feature is the hidden, subterranean chambers of the Guildhall, rebuilt after wartime damage and accessible beneath the modern hall. The ward includes the Peace Garden and stretches to include the modern St Helen’s Square, creating a mix of the ancient and the administrative at the city's centre.
