Halton & Caton

Halton and Caton sit in the Lune valley a few miles south of Lancaster. The A683 runs through the settlements, linking Lancaster with the lanes that climb into the Forest of Bowland. The River Lune threads past fields and village streets, and Caton and nearby Brookhouse form a linear settlement along the road. Housing, farms and small clusters of workshops sit close to the river; local trade is centred on a handful of shops, a post office and village services rather than larger retail centres.

Community life revolves around the village hall, village green and a couple of pubs, with a primary school and sports field used for local events. Rights of way follow the river and climb to higher ground, offering direct views to Clougha Pike and across the Forest of Bowland. The crossing of the Lune at Caton is a practical landmark on the A683, and the valley layout gives a clear sense of the river’s influence on settlement and land use here.
