About

Hanley is the commercial and cultural centre of Stoke-on-Trent, with main shopping streets, civic buildings and the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery. The museum holds a large collection of local ceramics and explains the town’s industrial past. The city-centre area includes a bus station, market stalls and a mix of retail, office and leisure facilities, and streets around the museum still host retailers and specialist pottery shops that trade in local wares and repairs.

Etruria lies immediately west of Hanley and shows the imprint of the town’s pottery and canal history. Josiah Wedgwood established his Etruria Works there in 1769, and the Trent & Mersey Canal runs through the area where the Caldon Canal joins it at Etruria Junction. The Etruria Industrial Museum preserves period machinery and there are canal-side towpaths and mooring points used by walkers, cyclists and narrowboats. Small workshops and studio potteries remain in the area, and the canals provide a clear route linking Etruria with other parts of the city.
