About

Hanwell lies in the London Borough of Ealing, west of central London, with Hanwell Broadway as its main high street. The Grand Union Canal runs through the area and the Hanwell Flight of six locks is a local landmark where narrowboats move between levels. The Great Western Main Line crosses the valley here; Hanwell railway station provides regular services into London Paddington. The brick Wharncliffe Viaduct carries the railway above the canal and fields, a visible piece of transport infrastructure immediately north of the locks.

The former Middlesex County Asylum, now St Bernard’s Hospital, occupies a site built in the 19th century and shapes much of the local street pattern. Green corridors follow the River Brent and link parks and allotments that residents use for walking and wildlife watching. Community groups run markets, clubs and an annual carnival along the Broadway, and small independent shops and cafes cluster near the station, giving the area a clearly local character.
