Haslingden

Haslingden sits in the Borough of Rossendale on the lower slopes of the moorland that rises to the east. The town grew around textile manufacture in the 18th and 19th centuries, and former mill buildings and terraces remain part of the street pattern. Local shops, community facilities and churches cluster around the town centre, while short lanes and ginnels link residential pockets to the main streets. Evidence of industrial infrastructure appears in converted mill units and stone bridges that cross the small streams running down from the moors.

Above Haslingden the Grane Valley contains a string of reservoirs — Calf Hey and Ogden among them — with stonework and access paths used by walkers and anglers. The moorland and reservoir embankments change quickly from town to open ground, with peat and gritstone outcrops that tell the area’s geology. Community clubs, local sports pitches and allotments sit close to the edge of the urban area, so countryside access and everyday services are within short reach of one another.
