About

Hawkinge is a village and civil parish in the Folkestone and Hythe district of Kent, located on the northern slopes of the North Downs just north of Folkestone. The centre includes local shops, a primary school and community facilities that serve surrounding settlements. Roads link the village to the A260 and to lanes that run across the downland; public footpaths provide direct access to rolling chalk fields and hedgerows that edge the village. Regular bus services connect Hawkinge with nearby towns for wider amenities and rail links.

The village sits on the site of the former RAF Hawkinge airfield, and the imprint of wartime activity remains visible: the pattern of old runways and dispersal areas can still be traced in satellite views and on the ground. The Hawkinge Aviation Museum occupies part of the airfield site and holds aircraft, archive material and station records relating to the Second World War. A war cemetery and memorials close to the former base record the lives of aircrew who served there, and local paths pass remnants of bunkers and perimeter tracks.
