About

The Headland sits on a rocky promontory at the eastern edge of Hartlepool and contains the town’s oldest streets and sea-facing landmarks. The Historic Quay and National Museum of the Royal Navy Hartlepool are on the waterfront; HMS Trincomalee, the oldest British warship afloat, is berthed there alongside reconstructed tall ships and dockside exhibits. St Hilda’s Church occupies a raised site close to the seafront and there are walking routes that follow the shoreline past rock pools and the old harbour mouth.

West View lies immediately inland from the Headland and is primarily residential, with small local shops, schools and green spaces serving the neighbourhood. The Heugh Battery coastal defence museum stands on the Headland edge and can be reached on foot from West View; its restored gun positions look out over the same stretch of sea used by local anglers and small craft. The area is compact enough for short walks between housing, the quay museums and the coastal path.
