About

Helmshore sits in the Rossendale Valley in Lancashire, built along the narrow floor of a river valley with steep slopes rising either side. The River Ogden passes through the village and the street pattern reflects its industrial past: rows of stone terraced houses, former mill buildings and narrow lanes. Small local shops, community halls and a war memorial mark the village centre, while public footpaths lead from the streets up onto surrounding moorland and valley sides.

The Helmshore Mills Textile Museum occupies two former cotton mills on the banks of the Ogden and interprets the area’s textile industry. Inside, restored weaving and spinning equipment and a collection of sample cloths tell how wool and cotton processing shaped daily life. Mill race channels and brick-built engine houses remain visible in the yards, linking the buildings to the water that once powered them and to the workers who lived nearby.
