Hickling

Hickling ward encompasses a large, low-lying area of the Norfolk Broads, dominated by Hickling Broad, the largest open water in the national park. The landscape is characterised by extensive reed beds, grazing marshes, and a network of dykes and waterways. Settlement is sparse and scattered, with the village of Hickling itself being the main focus, featuring a mix of residential properties and buildings supporting the boating and rural economy.

The area is internationally significant for nature conservation, managed in part by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust. The unique Broads ecology supports rare species like the swallowtail butterfly and the bittern. Land use is primarily agricultural or reserved for habitat, with boating, birdwatching, and walking being key activities. The flat terrain and big skies create a distinct, open atmosphere defined by water, wind, and wildlife.
