About

Highbridge & Burnham South is a coastal ward centred on the town of Burnham-on-Sea, situated where the River Brue meets the Bristol Channel. The area is characterised by extensive tidal mudflats and low-lying, reclaimed farmland known as the Brue Valley. Its economy has traditionally been linked to the port and seasonal tourism, with a notable shift in recent decades towards light industry and retail on its outskirts.

The town's most distinctive landmark is its low lighthouse, built on the beach itself due to the shallow, shifting sandbanks offshore. The long, gently sloping beach is backed by a concrete sea wall and a promenade. Residential streets, largely consisting of Victorian terraces and later suburban developments, extend inland from this coastal strip.
